Saints and Gargoyles at Play (4.55)

The Monk's first lesson to The Pilgrims is to tell them of the architectural wonders to be found at Durham Cathedral, of the intermingling of sculptures of Saints and Gargoyles that each symbolise the holiness of Heaven and the evil of Hell. He tells them this life is a plain of battle where the armies of Heaven and Hell clash, and that whilst the victory is assuredly heavenly, they must be ever vigilant least their souls are lost in earthly pleasures. He tells them the cathedral is a sanctuary, a ship tossed on the seas of the wilderness wherein lurk terrible dangers in the form of beasts and brigands, all of whom are lost in the eyes of God. But also assures them that to both the Saints and Gargoyles it is as a game they must play, that we are merely prizes in their divine sport, that we must never fool ourselves into believing that we are so very important in the eyes of Saints and Gargoyles, for is only God who truly loves us. But not so much he wouldn't see us cast into hell for our wickedness.
