about

Owing the impromptu nature of the concert I wasn't prepared with spare tape reels. By chance I had a free 1hr spool, and one other, which was half full. On this I recorded the sound-check, loathe to let such an opportunity pass. Even though everything was recorded DI, this was my usual way of working. Melissa and Steve had rigged up a reasonable PA which was basically monitoring the recording. I recorded two pieces during the sound-check - this one, which works - and an improvisation on the medieval song Veris Dulcis In Tempore, which was less successful, in my opinion.

This piece is a raga, recorded earlier in the evening as we were setting things up. It was loud enough to attract the attention of several passers-by, a few of whom came along to the concert. I must say, performing can be persuasive but owing to my somewhat random methods I never did it with any sort of regularity as I would never consciously wish to repeat myself simply to turn my music into a commodity, however so obscure. The recordings here I'm happy with as performances (despite the occasional hiccough) but as a musical medium it's never so very predictable, and when things go wrong (as they do) I wouldn't wish to be sat in front of an audience who may not share my sense of aesthetics.

Similarly when things go right, I might look out into an audience and see that not everyone is of the same opinion. Interesting to note that everyone present approved of my Veris Dulcis improvisation, but even after several listens I wasn't making so very much of it myself. Most likely because I'm not so very into playing 'tunes' as such, though I have done on occasion, I find nothing good ever comes of it.

Hermione Harvestman UK

'I feel like Wainwright - we are both hermetic ramblers. He made his books for when he was no longer capable of rambling his beloved fells, and I made my music for when I'm no longer able to ramble the by-ways of Albion - but only to listen, and think "Was that really me? That solitary figure who stood in a landscape dreaming of ages past in dread fear of the future."
