about

The Shroud (3.32)

The Jester tells a story of a Holy Shroud which is believed to have once contained the crucified body of Our Lord. The Priest who looked after it who gave pieces of it to pious pilgrims as Holy Relics and much miraculous healing ensued, but no matter how many pieces of the shroud he sells, it doesn't get any smaller, keeping its shape. When the old priest dies, a new priest is appointed to be the custodian of the shroud, only he will only sell pieces of the shroud to rich pilgrims, and so the shroud quickly dwindles away, until he is forced to make another shroud, and is so found out when the miracles stop. The Pope then sets forth a command that all pieces of the shroud that have been bought by rich pilgrims are to be returned, but when no pieces are forthcoming he asks that any pilgrim that has ever received a piece to return it, which starts a great pilgrimage to the Shrine of the Shroud where thousands of pieces of the shroud are placed there until the entire church is filled to overflowing with them. When there are no more pieces left, the pieces reassemble themselves into one holy shroud, which The Virgin Mary then tells them to place in a reliquary so that anyone of pure heart who looks upon it, will receive its blessing.

Hermione Harvestman UK

'I feel like Wainwright - we are both hermetic ramblers. He made his books for when he was no longer capable of rambling his beloved fells, and I made my music for when I'm no longer able to ramble the by-ways of Albion - but only to listen, and think "Was that really me? That solitary figure who stood in a landscape dreaming of ages past in dread fear of the future."
